Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy

Dame Vera Lynn School for Parents

The Dame Vera Lynn School for Parents is a unique service for families of young children with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Parents and children learn daily living skills together using the principles of Conductive Education.

The ethos of School for Parents is active learning through play. The children learn alongside their parents using guidelines from the Early Years curriculum incorporated within the holistic practice of Conductive Education

Conductive Education - Working in Partnership

  1. Through Conductive Education the School for Parents provides a vital service for babies and very young children, from birth to five years. The aim of the Dame Vera Lynn School for Parents is to work in partnership with parents to educate the young child with cerebral palsy or associated motor learning difficulties, and allied learning needs.
  2. A highly skilled and professional team helps parents to recognise a child’s unique qualities and achievements. Every day is an exciting experience, and parents can talk openly to each other about their child’s activities, sharing an understanding of each other’s situation.
  3. The team work closely with the parents helping the child to become an active learner. The children are motivated to learn through the use of activities, games, songs and stories based on termly topics.
  4. The emphasis in School for Parents is to provide strong practical support for all parents who have children with special needs within a mutually sympathetic and encouraging environment.

The children join age-appropriate groups with their parents and the sessions involve the children in active sitting, standing, walking, manipulation, communication, cognitive development and self-help skills.

"What would we have done without the help and support that School for Parents has provided, not just for the practical things, but also the optimism that you give parents for their child’s future".

"..this is a place my child can enjoy and he knows all of his needs will be met”.

The earlier that the families join the school the more successful they are likely to be in developing the child's abilities and confidence in the pre-school years, preparing them for life at home, in the community and for the next stage of their education in either a mainstream school or, if the child's needs require it, a special school. The service offers support packages to children when they go to mainstream school.

The School for Parents provision is one of the services on site at Ingfield Manor School. The school is recognised as a centre of excellence for Conductive Education and Communication.

Inspired by the Peto Institute in Hungary, Ingfield Manor School has a unique place in the development of Conductive Education in this country. The School for Parent service can be complemented by the Ingfield Manor Pre-School and Assessment Service subject to the agreement and funding from the child's Local Education Authority.
