Community
We are so lucky to have the support of many individuals, schools, churches, pubs and community groups who work so hard to raise funds for the Trust. The great thing about fundraising in the community is that it brings people together to have fun and enjoy themselves, while at the same time raising valuable funds to help with our work.
If you are a pupil or student at school or college, you could help us by getting your class, or indeed the whole establishment, to hold a fun event and encourage parents, family and friends to sponsor the activities to raise vital funds for the Trust. We would love to work with you to come up with some ideas.
Many local shops and pubs help us by taking a collection box, donating a raffle prize or putting a poster up in the window. We meet some really lovely people through this kind of contact. Many groups and associations throughout our catchment area kindly support the Trust by making us their “Charity of the Year”.
If you are a member of a local Golf or Tennis Club, knitting circle, youth club, drama group, choral society etc please keep us in mind and maybe encourage your members to adopt us as Charity of the Year or hold an event to benefit us.
We are always on hand to give a talk about our vital work if required and to provide general support.
Here are just a few of the things people have done in the community to raise funds for the Trust.
Thank you to The Weald Sixth Form in Billingshurst who have chosen The Dame Vera Lynn Trust as their Charity of the Year! Above is a picture of the six prefects who visited the School for Parents recently. We look forward to hearing all about your fundraising plans for the year ahead!
The Local Market Place is a new business created to stimulate independent trade in the Horsham district and to help charities at the same time.
It offers the general public money-saving coupons designed to encourage them to spend with local independent businesses. And each time a customer takes a coupon, they get to choose a charity to support and when they redeem their coupon with the local business, the Local Market Place donates at least 30% of its profits to one of four charities of the customer’s choosing.
Right now the Dame Vera Lynn Trust is NOT one of the chosen charities but the Local Market Place are very eager that we become one of the NEXT four. So if you live in the Horsham area and could help by looking at the website for a coupon that appeals to you and redeeming it, it brings us so much closer to being one of the chosen few!

£5000 Argus Appeal Cash for the Dame Vera Lynn Trust
The Argus Appeal kindly donated £5000 to the Dame Vera Lynn Trust. Argus Editor and Trustee of the Appeal along with Appeal Co-Ordinator Elsa Gillio visited the School for Parents in West Sussex to present the cheque to our President Dame Vera Lynn. The Argus Appeal has been raising funds for Sussex charities and groups for the last 54 years. We would like to thank them for their continued support.
Collecting in the Community
We are extremely lucky to have some great people out in the Community who have taken one of our Collection Boxes and are working really hard supporting the Dame Vera Lynn Trust. Here are just a few of them:
Fynn Valley Golf Club
Fynn Valley Golf Club is set in the rolling countryside of rural Suffolk in Witnesham, and is a friendly, family run Club where members and visitors enjoy the extensive golfing facilities as well as the thriving social side of the game. Bradley Wilkins from the Golf Club is pictured here.
Stonham Barns Garden Centre
Ian Scopes runs the family run independent garden centre based in Stonham Aspal, a short distance from Stowmarket. They hope to provide everything their customers need for their outdoor space and any animals that frequent it! He is pleased that the brighter weather will attract a few more customers putting their spare change in our box.
The Men’s Room
We are very grateful to Toby Ambrose the owner at The Men’s Room which is an outstanding barber shop in Hadleigh. With a vast amount of knowledge on hairdressing, the service is friendly and a local business in the area which you should definitely support. We are very grateful to have Toby on board as a new supporter and hope that all of the regulars consider donating some of their spare change to us!
Students chosen to create sensory garden at our School for Parents in East Anglia
Two garden design students have been chosen to create a sensory garden for the children at our School. University Campus students at Otley College, Jane Bailey and Carl Levett have been selected to give our garden a makeover. The pair, who study on the Foundation degree Landscape Garden Design course, were among nine students who presented their ideas for the project. The area is set in an old pig shed on a farm and part of the mission is to help empower the parents to work with their children and build their confidence.
